Style Secrets for Young Professionals - Fall Edition

Adulting is hard, here are tips on how I dress for the occasion!

Disclaimer: I want to change things up and start with a little bit of a glimpse as to how I feel about the transition into being a young professional.

Do you ever find yourself missing the kiddie table? Why didn’t my invitation to this “Adulting Party” get lost? Do I really have to get dressed up and go?

The way I see it, waking up every morning is kind of like playing dress up as a kid. You should feel enthusiastic and giddy. In reality, you only want to grow up when you are too young to know exactly what it means to go to work.

Every morning, I try to relive that sort of wonder of playing dress up. Maybe I can help you with that too. :)

Before we really begin, I want to say that this post is credited to my soul sister, Julia.

Julia recently asked me to write a blog post on what I wear to work and how I transitioned from my college wardrobe to my professional one. I felt like a fairy godmother being asked to grant a wish. Excitement kept me up at night because of all the potential outfits I could put together.

I assembled a number of looks that are work appropriate for my job. Stylistically, you could recreate these outfits with different hem lengths and necklines.

My piece of advice is to stay true to your style and individuality. You’ll be much more comfortable walking around at work if you are wearing clothes that represent you.

Minimalist Vibes

Featuring: my sister!

What says fall more than rust? Pair a good pair of pants with a sweater and you have your most effortless work look! Who said minimal had to be boring?

French Feelings

How does one achieve a certain… “Je ne sais quoi” and “oh la la” factor that will have your friends wanting to kiss you on both cheeks? Well dear, let me tell you!
Dress in neutral tones. The trench coat is a classic and pairs well with almost everything. It is a staple piece for a time capsule wardrobe.
A pencil skirt that hugs your waistline and hits below the knee can enhance your silhouette.
You could accessorize with pops of color, but staying in a neutral palette will create an air of elegance.

Wellies for Wet days

Honestly, when it is rainy out, I try to avoid jeans because wet jeans are the enemy! My favorite way to wear my red rain boots is to pair them with a dress. I was channeling a school teacher look with my cardigan and fit-and-flare. What do you think?
Style your hair in a ponytail and pick a color to match your mood! Off to school you go now!

Casual & Cozy

A great way to dress down on Friday while dressing up your jeans is to go for a preppy look. You might be noticing a theme here with my neutral color scheme.
I always default to pairing my cream jeans with a tan or beige sweater.
The key to dressing up is to add pizazz with a statement piece. I prefer outerwear with a splash of color. My tartan shawl is one of my favorites.
Accessorize with your best shoes and a watch. A watch doesn’t just tell you the time, it tells everyone else that you’re adulting, right?

Colorful & Comfy

Let me tell you about how comfy this outfit is!
Women’s dress pants sometimes feel like wearing sweat pants to work. If you disagree, you should pay J. Crew or Zara a visit.

The bell sleeve top is roomy and easy to move around in. Some people love a statement print, I like to be more subtle if I am color blocking my pants and my shoes. The print on my top is flowers and their names, acquired at Zara.

When it comes to flats, I love the structure of a good d’Orsay pair. The photo doesn’t quite capture the shade of canary, but that just means you’ll have to bump into me in person to see these gems. :)

Overall, a very early autumn look.

Oxford Babe

Do you ever buy one item because you love it and then you have to figure out how to put it together with other pieces so it doesn’t get lonely? That’s how I make impulsive purchases. Oxfords on women was a very popular trend a few years ago, which means I bought these in high school.
My favorite way to wear them is with a plaid skirt. And I always feel like my plaid skirt would be lost without a cable knit sweater.

PSSST…can you keep a secret? I wore my cardigan backwards- for both fashion and function!

Back to the grind!

I hope I helped you, even a teensy bit! I adapt all of these outfits with different pieces and accessories.
Don’t hesitate to leave a comment or question. Stay tuned for a blog post on my favorite places to shop and how to build a time capsule closet.

Until next time!
